Brain Functions & Networks
The brain does not divide neatly into separate boxes for memory, emotion, attention or movement. Most functions emerge from networks of regions working together.
Sensing and perception
Your sensory systems turn light, sound, touch, smell, taste and signals from inside the body into patterns of neural activity. The brain then combines those patterns with context, attention and past experience. What we perceive is therefore an active interpretation, not a perfect recording of the outside world.
Attention and thinking
Attention helps prioritise some information while other information receives less processing. Planning, reasoning and decision-making depend on interactions among frontal and parietal regions, sensory areas, memory systems and deeper brain structures. These systems share limited processing resources, which is one reason multitasking can become costly.
Memory and learning
Memory is not one thing. Working memory briefly holds information in mind; episodic memory helps us remember events; semantic memory supports knowledge; and procedural systems help us learn skills. Learning changes the strength and organisation of connections across these systems.
Emotion and motivation
Emotions are produced by distributed networks involving the cortex, amygdala, hypothalamus, brainstem and body signals. They help prioritise what matters, shape memory and guide action. The idea of a single isolated “limbic system” controlling emotion is useful historically, but modern neuroscience describes a more distributed picture.
Movement and body regulation
Movement involves motor cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, brainstem and spinal pathways working together. Other networks continuously regulate breathing, circulation, temperature, sleep and internal balance. Much of this happens without entering conscious awareness.
A useful rule of thumb
When a headline claims that scientists have found “the brain area for” a complex human ability, it is usually worth asking what other regions and networks were involved.
